Prof. Dr. Julia Kursell

Julia Kursell (1968) is Professor of Musicology at the University of Amsterdam. She completed her doctoral studies at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München with a dissertation on music in the early Russian avant-garde (Wien 2003). Her second book (Habilitation) Epistemologie des Hörens: Helmholtz's physiological Grundlegung der Musiktheorie was published in 2018. Her research focuses on 20th- and 21st-century composition, the history of musicology, and the relationship between music and science. She is co-director of the Vossius Center for the History of Humanities and Sciences at the University of Amsterdam and one of the founders of the journal History of Humanities.
