JAQUES VREDEMAN: Musica miscella (Franeker, 1602) and other works

Leeuwarden/Utrecht 2015

224 pp.

The edition is published jointly by the Fryske Akademy (Frisian Academy) in Leeuwarden and the Koninklijke Vereniging voor Nederlandse Muziekgeschiedenis. It is therefore a bilingual publication. Texts are in Frisian and in English.

There is an elaborate introduction containing a biography of the composer, a sketch of his background in Mechelen and in Leeuwarden, a discussion of the various sources for his music and the pieces themselves. This is followed by a bibliography, an explanation of the editorial policy, a description of the sources and a critical commentary. As last part of the introduction the texts of the vocal compositions are provided in their original language (Italian, Frisian, French or Dutch) and in English and Frisian translations. The musical part of the publication contains twenty-six vocal pieces for four or five voices (a capella), twenty canons in two or three parts, of which only one (a mensuration canon) has text, and two Dutch songs.
